Greening drive for environmental preservation

1 August 2017, Jamnagar

Worldwide, at least 10 million trees are cut down or burned on a daily basis. Trees contribute to their environment by providing oxygen, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. While India’s carbon emissions are increasing, a single tree can absorb as much as 21.77 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year and filter air by removing dust, absorbing other pollutants like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide.

Essar Bulk Terminal Salaya Ltd (EBTSL) in collaboration with Essar Nand Vidya Niketan School Jamnagar, recently carried out a large scale greening drive. Under the biodiversity project of the school, in collaboration with Center for Environment Education, 2,000 tree saplings were planted by 160 student participants, followed by an intensive waste management drive in which waste plastic water bottles were used as planters to create a vertical garden in the school.

The students were left responsible for its upkeep to sensitize them to environmental conservation. This is one of the many initiatives undertaken under environment sustainability to combat climate change due to environmental degradation. Essar Foundation continues to collaborate with stakeholders in driving a gradual yet steady greening process across the state.
